Level assembly with crates and gnomes

Category: Mechanics. Updated

Absence of Color has no loading screen. As soon as an area has loaded, you see the ground, and the rest is delivered.

How it plays out

  1. Every object comes in a wooden crate the size of the object: a barrel in a small crate, a tree in a tall one, a house in a large one.
  2. The crates fall from the sky and bounce when they land.
  3. Gnomes run in from outside the picture, pry the crates open and run off again. The sides fold open in four directions.
  4. Meanwhile a loading bar fills up and comments on everything with silly lines, in German or English depending on the system language.
  5. At 100%, a big hairy gnome hand reaches up from below, pulls the loading bar out of the picture and then pulls the displays (HUD) in.

While the assembly plays, you cannot control the hero.

Short version or skip

The full show plays on your first visit to an area. Later visits get a short version, four times as fast and without gnomes. You can always skip it, with A or Start on the gamepad, or Space or Enter on the keyboard.

Colors count here too

Crates and gnomes follow the color mechanic. The crates’ wood needs red and green and stays pale until both channels are back.

In the prototype, the loading bar lines are a first draft written with AI. They will be rewritten by hand before the game is released.

This page describes the prototype. Whatever changes on the way to the finished game will be added here.
